Solutions We Propose

Return to Home Page

Here are the ideas we propose to bring common sense to the 595 re-design project. Our five point plan includes:

1. BUILD S.R. 84 BYPASS TO REDUCE CONGESTION ON I-595

FDOT already has plans to re-route S.R. 84 so it does not have to merge with the interstate to be fully utilized. By connecting this feeder road to itself at turnpike area, motorists will have greater flexibility to avoid congestion on I-595. The result: up to two new lanes of traffic can move eastbound and two others will flow westbound, without impacting the freeway and by providing another route east and west.

2. ADD TWO LANES AT GRADE LEVEL ON EASTBOUND AND WESTBOUND 595

Make the first and most practical solution to easing I-595 traffic by using the least expensive alternative. Current FDOT plans are to add two lanes on the north and south sides of the interstate, at grade level. This enhancement, in conjunction with a "continuous" S.R. 84, will help to solve today's problems without requiring leasing an elevated skyway to a company for 35 to 50 years or more.

3. DEVELOP REALISTIC MASS TRANSIT SOLUTIONS ALONG S.R. 84

Stop repeating mistakes of the past by adding more lanes but glossing over the need to promote and create mass transit. Add a light rail or monorail component to S.R. 84, either on the north of I-595 or on the south.

4. CONNECT I-595 TO FLORIDA'S TURNPIKE BY RAMPS TO AND FROM ADDED LANES AT THE EXISTING LEVEL OF 595

Instead of building an elevated miles-long skyway that does not connect to I-75 and I-95, add a ramp from two lanes at grade level 595 eastbound and westbound to Florida's Turnpike. This will eliminate the often dangerous curved exit/entrance to the Turnpike which currently exists. The ramps would be just east and west of the 595/Turnpike interchange.

5. CONTINUE TO STUDY POPULATION AND TRAFFIC TRENDS TO ASSESS THE NEED FOR AN ELEVATED TOLL BRIDGE WITHOUT RUSHING TOWARD CONSTRUCTION OF THE SKYWAY

Continue to study the need for an elevated and extremely expensive toll bridge in light of changing population and economic trends. Put plans for a double decked 595 on hold, and avoid a long-term lease with corporate interests. Add the most practical elements of re-design to the highway first by adding lanes at grade level, re-routing S.R. 84 and immediately design and build meaningful mass transit.
